Man caught driving at 234kmh on motorway is banned

A motorist has been banned from driving after being caught doing nearly 150mph (241kph) on a motorway, police said.

Billy James Rich, 23, was behind the wheel of a black BMW on the A350 in the early hours of Wednesday when he overtook an unmarked police vehicle at speed.

He continued onto the M4 motorway - reaching 146mph (234kph).

Wiltshire officers pulled him over on the hard shoulder of the motorway between junction 17 at Chippenham and junction 16 at west Swindon.

Rich, of The Green, Highworth, Wiltshire, was charged with drink driving and speeding and was remanded to appear at Swindon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was disqualified from driving for 22 months, fined £692, and ordered to pay a £69 victim surcharge and prosecution costs of £85.

Pc Andy Lee said: "The speed limit is there for a reason.

"Not only did this driver reach completely unacceptable speeds, he had also been drinking.

"He clearly had no consideration for others and his actions put himself, other drivers and road users in danger.

"Please think before you get behind the wheel - if you are going to flout the law with behaviour like this, you will be caught, arrested and prosecuted.

"Nothing is worth taking the risk."
