Footage has emerged of the moment a grieving father attacked the man who killed his three-year-old daughter.

The grieving father snapped and attacked his daughter in a courtroom on Detroit on Friday.

Footage shows the moment Dwayne Smith punched Clifford Thomas in the side of the head during his sentencing.

Thomas was convicted along with Jasmine Gordon in the death of of Gordon’s three-year-old daughter Jamila Smith, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Jamila’s father Dwayne Smith was about to deliver his victim impact statement when he found himself in the vicinity of Clifford Thomas and took action.

His daughter Jamila died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries in September, 2014. Her death was ruled a homicide after a police investigation.

The pair took the three-year-old girl to hospital and told police she had fell and hit her head. However, she was found to have received injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.

Both Gordon and Thomas were convicted of involuntary manslaughter earlier this month and were due for sentencing on Friday.

Mr Smith was removed from the courtroom following the altercation, and police said there would be no charges pressed.

"No charges were pursued against those involved as the judge declined to hold Dwayne Smith in contempt of court," a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said.

Gordon was sentenced to seven to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and 14 to 25 years for first-degree child abuse as an aider and abettor, police said.

Thomas was sentenced to six to 15 years for involuntary manslaughter and one to two years for resisting and obstructing a police officer.
