Gardai believe that the incident in which a woman was attacked by a man in St Stephen's Green yesterday was a possible sexual assault.

The disturbing incident happened at approximately 3.30pm yesterday in the popular city centre park. 

Gardai confirmed the assault yesterday evening and said a woman had been rushed to hospital following the attack, which occurred in broad daylight.

Now the investigation is looking at it as a potential sex attack, according to our sources.

The condition of the victim is unknown, a spokesperson said, but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. 

A section of the popular city park was closed off for a technical examination following the assault but it has since been reopened.

However, but the scene is being preserved. 

A man has been arrested in relation to the assault and he is being held at Pearse Street Garda Station.

Gardai said the investigation is still ongoing and they are appealing for witnesses.
