A heavy drinker with an extensive gun collection blasted his son’s girlfriend, his wife and a third person to death before being disarmed and shot in a row over a washing machine.

The incident took place on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles, California, US.

The 54-year-old man first killed his bedridden wife who had recently suffered a stroke, before turning the gun on his son’s 48-year-old girlfriend and Ernesto Calzadilla (27).

The man’s son, 33 year old Christopher Morey, eventually disarmed his father and shot him, according to police.

Morey was booked on suspicion of murder and held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to reports.

"It looks like it was a dispute between the dad and the son's girlfriend, probably over using the washing machine," Sheriff's Lt. John Corina told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

"For some reason, this set the dad off."
