Former NFL star and convicted murderer Aaron Hernandez found dead in prison

Aaron Hernandez, the former American Football star who was convicted of murdering a man in 2015, has been found dead in his prison cell this morning.

According to the Department of Corrections facility he was in, Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley Massachusetts, Hernandez was found at around 3:05 a.m local time.

In a statement they said: “Mr. Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population unit. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilising a bedsheet that he attached to his cell window. Mr. Hernandez also attempted to block his door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.”

Hernandez, 27, was one of the stars of the NFL during his three year career, playing as a tight end for the New England Patriots from 2010 until the team dropped him after he was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.

In 2015, Hernandez was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.

On Friday, Hernandez was acquitted of murdering two men in Boston in 2012.
