A 24-year-old man has admitted to drunkenly falling asleep behind the wheel with a loaded automatic handgun on his lap at a courthouse in London.

Police said 24-year-old Nathan Gardier was intoxicated behind the wheel of his car and woke up from his boozy slumber as two police officers removed the automatic handgun from his car in Willow Walk, east London, during an incident last week.

Gardier pleaded guilty at Thames Magistrates' Court on Friday to the possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as being in charge of a motor vehicle with alcohol level above the prescribed limit.

He is expected to appear for sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday August 16.
