A junior child doctor who was caught with more than 50,000 indecent images of children has been jailed.

Ediz Ekrem, of Dulwich in south London, was handed a 16-month prison term when he was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday, the Metropolitan Police said.

Ekrem, 31, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of children after police stormed his home in October last year.

Officers spoke to Ekrem, who confirmed that he had downloaded indecent images of children, but said he deleted them.

Detectives seized his laptop and hard drive where they discovered a stash of 51,851 images - including 187 in the most serious category.

Ekrem was working part-time in the paediatric unit of a south London hospital when he was arrested, although none of the images featured his young patients.

The General Medical Council was informed and immediately withdrew Ekrem's licence to practise medicine pending the outcome of the police investigation, the Met said.

Detective Constable John Daly said: "An appropriate sentence has been handed down today.

"Ekrem is a person who was supposed to be trusted and responsible for looking after the most ill and vulnerable in society.

"He has abused that trust by committing this offence. Ekrem was feeding a market for the most appalling and perverted images for a number of years.

"The sharing and making of indecent images of children is an abhorrent crime and one that the Metropolitan Police Service will continue to pursue and bring the perpetrators before the courts."
