A convicted paedophile managed to steal a school bus and drive around trying to pick up vulnerable children, police in Utah have said.

Patrick James Fredricksen (30) is alleged to have taken the bus from the home of the driver after skipping work in the small town of Cleveland, central Utah.

Inside the bus he found a list of children's names and directions to their homes. Police say he tried unsuccessfully to pick up one child and had been asking for directions to another child's home when he was caught.

He was only stopped when concerned parents contacted police saying a solitary male was driving around in a school bus smoking a cigarette.

He travelled to a young girl's house and asked for her before leaving and stealing the bus.

The 30-year-old is said to have given up his job after just two days in the position laying turf at a sports ground. He was only released from prison several days before.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports he was placed on Utah's sex offender registry after he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor in 2004.

He was placed on the sex offender register in 2011.
