An eight-year-old Alabama boy has been charged with murder by beating a one-year-old girl to death while they were left home alone.

And 26-year-Katerra Lewis is also charged with manslaughter in the death of her daughter, one-year-old Kelcia Lewis, Birmingham police said.

Several children aged two to eight were left home alone while Katerra Lewis and a friend went to a nightclub last month.

The girl began crying while the children were alone, and the boy attacked her causing severe head trauma and major damage to her internal organs, police said. The two weren't related.

Lt. Sean Edwards issued the following statement about the case on Tuesday afternoon:

"Detectives learned the one year old was left home alone without any adult supervision. Also, left at the home alone were several children ages ranging from 2 years old to 8 years old.

"Apparently, the mother of the one year old left the house going to the nightclub with her friend who is also the homeowner.

"It is believed while the mother and friend were at the club; the eight year old viciously attacked the one year old because the one year old would not stop crying. The one year old suffered from severe head trauma as well as major internal organ damage which ultimately lead to her death.

"This investigation is ongoing."

Lewis has posted 15,000 dollars (£9,900) bond, and the boy is in state custody.
