'Axe-wielding man attacks 18 people on German train'

Reports from Germany this evening say that a man wielding an axe was shot by police after a savage attack on 18 train passengers.

Local media in the region of Wurzburg, a city in central Germany, have said that a huge number people were injured in the attack.

Initial reports suggested 21 were injured by the attacker, though that number is now thought to be 18.

Further reports suggest police have indicated that four of the injuries sustained are life threatening.

The suspect in the shocking attack is reported to have been shot following the rampage.

Police are now thought to be carrying out an operation in Heidingsfield, an area of Wurzburg.

The railway line between Wurzburg-Heidingsfeld and Ochsenfurt, where the attack is said to have been carried out, is now closed.
