A woman has appeared in court accused of attempting to murder a newborn baby who was found abandoned in an amusement arcade.

Nicola Glover, 29, of Hughes Avenue, Prescot, Merseyside, is also charged with child cruelty.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "She appeared at South Sefton Magistrates' (Court) this morning and has been remanded to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on Wednesday 6 May."

Emergency services were called to Silcock's Amusement Arcade in Southport last Thursday after staff found the baby abandoned inside the disabled toilets.

The girl was later named April by carers at Ormskirk and District General Hospital as an appeal was made to find her mother, who was traced the next day.

Police added today that April has been discharged from hospital and is now in local authority care.
