Trial of garda accused of assault adjourned
THE trial of a garda, who denies attacking a man in Dublin city-centre in 2012, has been adjourned.
Garda Donal O'Neill, who is based at Pearse Street station, in Dublin, is accused of assaulting a named man on Pearse Street on December 16, 2012.
The trial at Dublin District Court was unable to proceed yesterday and Judge Bryan Smyth agreed to adjourn the case until June.
Video evidence is also to be used in the hearing which is expected to last two days.
No evidence relating to the allegation has been given so far in the proceedings.
The assault charge is a summary offence which on conviction can result in a possible fine and/or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months.
His solicitor had asked for the adjournment and said it was a “career threatening trial” for his client. The court heard the defence were not in a position to proceed because their counsel had been unavoidably held up in another trial.
