Teen joyrider jailed

A DUBLIN youth, who was a passenger in a stolen car which led gardai on a high-speed chase, has been given a six-month custodial sentence.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named because he is a juvenile, had recently completed a custodial sentence for an earlier offence when he was caught travelling in a stolen car in the Swords area in north Dublin on May 18 last.

Gardai were led on a high-speed pursuit until the stolen car crashed. Three other people are currently before the courts in connection with the incident.

Judge John O'Connor noted the teen's mother was supportive of her son who has a drug abuse problem. However, he said it was a very serious offence and he was also furnished with a negative pre-sentence probation report on the youth.

He also said the teenager had been given chances in relation to co-operating with the Probation Service.

The teenager already has 14 prior criminal conviction and his last custodial sentence was for a motor theft offence.
