Man jailed for four years for sexually assaulting two of his son's young friends

A man has been jailed for four years at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for sexually assaulting two of his son's young friends.

The 53 year old admitted molesting the boys on 14 occasions. The abuse was discovered when one of the victims' parents saw Viber messages from the accused saying he loved him.

A meeting was held between the families of the two victims and the accused during which he got to his knees and asked the boys for forgiveness.

The families decided the man would return to his native India until his youngest victim completed his Junior Certificate. However the man returned a month before the exams and the families reported him to gardaí shortly afterwards.

The man, who can't be named to protect the victims' identities, pleaded guilty to 14 counts of sexual assault on the two boys between 2011 and 2014 in his Dublin home. The victims were aged between 11 and 17 during the period.

Garda Thomas Doyle told the court that the abuse occurred when the boys were been babysat in the accused's house.

The abuse included the accused groping and rubbing his penis on one of the victims. He also put his mouth on the penis of one of the boys.

After the final incident of sexual assault the man sent several messages to one of the victims asking “do you like girls?” and if he was free to meet up. He also sent messages saying “I need you” and “you make me happy, I will make happy you (sic).” He told the boy he loved him.

The accused was arrested in June 2015 but admitted only to touching on the boys' legs.

Defence counsel Dominic McGinn SC said his client was very remorseful and had no previous convictions. He said he was now shunned in his community.

Judge Martin Nolan said the accused had expressed remorse and noted his lack of previous convictions. But he said this was a case of serious and repeated incidents of abuse.
