A MAN has denied stealing more than €7,000 worth of eye cream from the Shelbourne Hotel.

Liam Rainsford (54) is alleged to have stolen 240 bottles of the cream in an incident earlier this year.

The case against him was adjourned for hearing on a later date when he appeared before Dublin District Court.

Mr Rainsford, of Cremore Heights, Glasnevin, is charged with one count of theft.

The offence is alleged to have happened at The Shelbourne Hotel, St Stephen’s Green, last January 19.

Sgt Gail Smith said it was alleged that two boxes of firming eye cream were taken and the total value of them was €7,200. The property had been recovered.

The DPP directed summary disposal of the case at district court level and jurisdiction was accepted.

Defence barrister John Griffin said the accused was pleading not guilty and seeking a date for hearing.

Sgt Smith said there would be five witnesses for the prosecution. Noting the value of the products allegedly stolen, Judge Anthony Halpin asked: “Was it some special cream or maybe there were a number of jars in the boxes?”

Gda Sgt Smith confirmed that there were 240 bottles in total. “

That makes more sense,” the judge said.

Judge Halpin adjourned the case to a later date, when it will be tried in the non-jury court.

The accused remained silent during the brief proceedings and was remanded on continuing bail.
