A man accused of murdering his former partner, who absconded during his trial, has been refused bail at the High Court.

Vesel Jahiri was charged with murdering his former partner, Anna Finnegan (25), at Allendale Glen, Clonsilla in Dublin on September 21, 2012. She died of a single stab wound.

The 34-year-old of no fixed abode but originally from Kosovo, pleaded not guilty and went on trial at the Central Criminal Court last year. He also pleaded not guilty to assault causing harm on Ms Finnegan's brother, Karl, on the same date.

The trial lasted a number of months, but the jury failed to reach a verdict after deliberating for more than 10 hours over three days.

Mr Jahiri had failed to turn up to the final days of his trial, breaking his bail, and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

Today lawyers for Mr Jahiri making an application for bail said that his trial date was for set for February 20, 2017, meaning he would face an 18-month delay.

Gardai told Vincent Heneghan BL, for the State, they were objecting to bail on a number of grounds.

Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring refused bail but said she was concerned about the delay.

She acceded to a request by his counsel John Fitzgerald BL to seek an earlier trial date from the High Court in October.
