Infamous prison inmate Leon Wright appeared in court in Portlaoise surrounded by officers in riot gear where he was charged with assaulting a prison officer.

Wright appeared at Portlaoise District Court last week, and he was kept in handcuffs during the entire proceedings, accompanied by five prison officers in full riot gear.

The 28-year old was charged over an alleged incident on January 15 this year at Portlaoise Prison.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly told the court that there was CCTV of the alleged incident.

Wright, who is not due for release until 2019, was remanded on bail by judge Alan Mitchell until the case returns to court on July 13.

Wright has not yet entered a plea and the July hearing will allow him time to either plead guilty or for the judge to fix a trial date over the alleged incident.
