The man who bared his buttocks at a judge in court has lost the hearing in one ear following a vicious prison beating.

Brian Joyce, of St Enda's, Beechpark, Ennis, gained national headlines when during proceedings at Ennis District Court in October he pulled down his pants and slapped his bare arse before spinning around and mauling his penis while shouting at the Judge Patrick Durcan.

It happened after the lawmaker refused to grant Joyce’s younger brother John bail.

Three days after the incident, Brian Joyce was found in a pool of his own blood in Limerick Prison. John has been credited for saving his life by restraining the attacker.

The full extent of the savage beating he received was revealed in Ennis Circuit Court yesterday by his counsel Pat Whyms during a hearing into a case regarding a mass brawl at a graveyard in Ennis in 2013.

Mr Whyms told the court that Joyce had been left deaf in one ear and that the attack had also left him with a fractured skull.

In court yesterday Joyce pleaded guilty to a weapons offence and was handed a 12-month suspended sentence.
