Cop accused of masturbating while driving claims he was just trying to stay awake

A cop who was allegedly spotted by a fellow motorist masturbating in his car has told a court in the US that he was simply trying to stay awake.

The case of Glenn C. Woolard is covered in philly.com and they reveal what was heard in a court room this week.

A woman claimed that she was driving along a motorway in Pennsylvania this week when she spotted Woolard "waving it around" and fondling himself.

The woman called called the cops and gave them Woolard's licence plate.

When the cops arrived at his home, Woolard initially denied it but then confessed to exposing himself. He also confessed to a similar incident in the car park of a supermarket a week earlier. In that latter case, a woman saw him claiming that he had his car window down 'as if he wanted to be seen'.

According to the court record, Woolard told the cops that he wasn't doing it for sexual kicks, it was in fact to keep him awake while commuting home from work.

Both incidents happened in Wollard's personal car and he was off duty and not in uniform.

Woolard, who has been suspended by the force, is charged with two counts of indecent exposure and may yet lose his job over the incidents.
