Community in shock after 'devoted' son dies hours after mother's funeral
A community has been left in shock after a devoted son passed away just hours after he buried his mother.
Tim McDonagh died suddenly in the early hours of Saturday morning, shortly after he had attended his mother Kathleen's funeral in Meelick, Co Mayo on Friday.
Tim, who was aged in his early 60s, was buried alongside Kathleen yesterday morning.
It's understood that they lived together in Bohola and that Tim cared for Kathleen, who was aged in her 90s.
Tim was said to be very interested in sport, particularly GAA and angling.
Local Fianna Fail Councillor Michael Smyth paid tribute to Mr McDonagh.
Cllr Smyth told Independent.ie: "Tim spent most of his life caring for his mother, some of his sisters and brothers might have moved away from the area so he looked after her, they lived together and you might often see him driving her around, he was very good and devoted to her.
"He was a gent, a quiet but funny man who worked on their farm, enjoyed fishing and would have a couple of drinks at the weekend.
"I saw him at Kathleen's funeral on Friday morning and he was obviously very upset.
"To hear of him dying just hours later has left a big shock."
He continued to say: "I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to to their family and friends at this time, he was a a very popular character and you could see that by the huge attendance at his funeral."
Tim, who was single and didn't have children, is survived by his brothers Seamus, Gerry and Joe, his sisters Margaret and Mary and extended family members.
