Vogue: Trump shows true colours with military trans ban

DONALD Trump has been bad news from day one and now we are seeing the true colours of the most powerful man in the world.

When he was elected, I simply hoped that White House officials would be running the show behind the scenes.

He has already tried to ban people from certain ‘Muslim’ countries from travelling into America.

His plan to build a wall between America and Mexico has yet to come to fruition, but, shockingly, he has managed to put some very discriminatory plans into action.

His latest ban is on transgender people serving in the U.S. military.

Was this not the same man advocating gay and trans rights during the election?

He tweeted this statement: “Thank you to the LGBT community! I will fight for you while Hillary brings in more people that will threaten your freedoms and beliefs.”

Now he is going against the very community he promised to help.

Not only will he ban any future trans people serving in the military, he also intends to discharge any current trans people.

The White House has not yet decided how it will implement the President’s ban on transgender people serving in the military.

As far as I’m concerned, serving your country is an incredibly selfless act.  Anyone who risks their life for the protection of their fellow citizens should be applauded.

Instead of thanking everyone in the military, Mr Trump has decided to discriminate against some of them.

I have never seen him risk his life for his country, yet he has the audacity to choose who he will and won’t accept into the army based on a person’s gender.

This is discrimination, there is no other way of looking at it, and I don’t understand why the White House is allowing this to happen.

“The United States government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US military,” Donald Trump tweeted.

“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”

He added that the decision came “after consultation with my generals and military experts”.

The tremendous medical costs! Pull the other one, what about the fortune that is spent on Viagra for the army every year? This costs several times the amount it would for any transgender medical costs.

I am not surprised by all of this, it doesn’t shock me. It does, however, make my blood boil, it makes me feel so angry I could cry and I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be trans after hearing this announcement.

Trump is ignorant and uninformed with regards to the trans community. I wonder if he knows how much is spent in other areas in the military.

I did a documentary on the transgender community last year and they have enough people judging them and deciding what is right and wrong.

We are all people, all the same, all capable of doing whatever we want regardless of our gender.

Cate McGregor, who was once Australia’s highest-ranking transgender military officer, has hit out after Trump’s announcement that the U.S. government will “not accept or allow” transgender individuals to serve for their country.

She said: “Coming from someone who has never served, and who disparaged [John] McCain’s heroism, you can see it for what it is.

“Why should we be surprised?”

I am really hoping that this ban is just another ridiculous stunt by the president and won’t actually be enforced, because this is going to set the trans community back.

Former Defence Secretary Ash Carter summed up the situation perfectly.

“To choose service members on other grounds than military qualifications is social policy and has no place in our military,” Carter said in a statement, noting there were already transgender individuals serving “capably and honorably”.

I despair at this decision, it’s completely unjust and is only going to set America back.
