The Coastguard has launched a search off the coast of Mayo as a lobster fisherman is feared missing.

A relative of the man, who is understood to have been in the vessel by himself, contacted the coastguard as he failed to return back at the time it was due earlier this evening.

Local lifeboats, the Ballyglass Coastguard unit and the Rescue 115 helicopter from the Shannon base are conducting a search off the coast of Belmullet, Co Mayo.

“There is a report of a fishing vessel overdue so we have just started a search for it at the moment.   It’s a local fishing boat.  It may just be a little late returning but we are just sending out someone to have a look,” a member of the Coastguard said.

“It happens sometimes that they are just a little late getting back but we can’t take the chance.”

The search is ongoing.
