There were scenes of chaos on the M1 motorway this morning after a truck’s trailer caught fire between the junctions of Ravensdale (J19) and Jonesborough (J20) – with the fire brigade aghast at the decision by some commuters to turn around and travel the wrong way down the motorway in an effort to circumvent the incident.

Fire fighters arrived at the scene and were stunned to meet some cars travelling back towards them in order to reach the exit and travel around the blazing truck – which has naturally caused gridlock on the road.

Motorists are asked to avoid the route if at all possible.

They described the decision by some motorists to attempt the risky move as ‘extremely dangerous’ and said they were putting their own lives, as well as those of others, in real danger.

The fire started around 5.30am and the southbound carriageway remained closed, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

On Twitter, AA Roadwatch said: 'M1 UPDATE: N1/M1 sbound closed at J20 due to truck on fire. Diversions in place via J20 onto Old Dublin Rd & return to M1 at J19'.
