Carnage as four die in separate incidents in night of tragedy on our roads

It was a night of tragedy on our roads as it has emerged that four people died in separate road incidents yesterday and this morning.

A pedestrian was struck by a car on the N2 at Balrath, Co Meath, at around 1.30am this morning – between Ashbourne and Slane.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Navan Mortuary, where a post mortem will take place.

Shortly after that incident, at around 2.30am, a woman was killed in a single vehicle accident in Cookstown, Co. Tyrone.

The woman is believed to be in her 50s.

Earlier in Tyrone, police arrested a man after another man lost his life in a collision involving a van and a lorry in Strabane. The incident took place at around 10pm

In another incident a man, who is believed to be in his 30s, died after his vehicle collided with a fence on the N5 at Knockanour near Castlebar in the county.

The incident happened around 7.30pm yesterday evening.

He was brought to Mayo General Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

He was the sole occupant of the car and a full technical examination was carried out by garda forensic teams.
