A member of An Garda Siochana has reportedly died after a shooting incident in the early hours of the morning.

The Irish Independent reports the senior Gardai died following a shot with an official issue handgun at Ballyshannon Garda Station where he was based.

The sergeant, who has not been named, was a man in his 40s and was married with three children, the Independent said.

A source said the weapon had been taken from a store room in the station.

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) have launched an investigation into the incident, which is being described as an horrific tragedy.

It is understood Gardai will also conduct an investigation and counselling will be offered to the officer’s colleagues, who are said to be traumatised by the incident.

A source said: "This is a dreadful tragedy and our thoughts are with our colleague’s wife and children. This has left his family and colleagues heartbroken and traumatised."
