Guests at a hotel in Sligo had to be evacuated after the building was engulfed in flames in the early hours of the morning.

The Ocean Sands hotel in Enniscrone was forced to immediately evacuate 128 patrons and a number of staff at around 3.15am this morning after a fire broke out.

Four units of the fire brigade attended the scene along with an ambulance.

It is understood that no one was injured during the incident.

The kitchen of the hotel is reported to have been severely damaged in the fire, while the rest of the hotel suffered damage from the smoke.

Gardai are investigating the incident, although a spokesperson told that the fire appears to have been accidental.

The hotel has been forced to close for at least two weeks, and guests have been transferred to hotels and bed-and-breakfasts in the surrounding area.

RTE reports that the hotel was due to host a wedding reception on Saturday but that it has since been moved to another venue in Ballina, Co Mayo.
