An idiotic Belfast Manchester United fan was caught shoplifting from a supermarket because his own name was on the back of his replica Red Devils shirt.

Paul Robert Benson was spotted by staff as he tried to leave the Belfast Tesco store with £104.54 worth of gear.

Benson, who had 'Benson 22' printed on the back of his replica shirt, was caught on CCTV.

He pleaded guilty in Craigavon Magistrate's Court last Wednesday.

Handing down Benson a 12-month probation order, Judge Mervyn Bates told him he might as well have worn a "neon sign" identifying himself during the bungled theft on September 3 last year.

The police were made aware of a shoplifting incident at around 3pm that day.

Benson had dropped the goods in the car park after being spooked by staff.
