Tom O'Sullivan, who won five All-Ireland's with Kerry is being hailed as a hero in Listowel after bravely seeing off a criminal gang in the line of duty.

According to Independent.ie, O'Sullivan was on duty on Thursday in the Kerry town when word reached the station that a group of masked men were entering a house.

The former All Star defender was first on the scene and gave chase to the raiders after jumping over a wall into the premises.

As they ran off towards a black Audi A3, O'Sullivan caught one of the men and attempted to arrest him but he was set upon by the other men, who were armed with hurleys.

O'Sullivan was not seriously hurt in the incident and he managed to grab crucial evidence, including a hurley and a baseball cap, before the men fled.

The items have been sent for analysis and it is hoped they will help to find the gang, who are suspected to be responsible for a spate of robberies in the south west of the country.

Inspector Pat O'Connell of Listowel station said the items confiscated by Gda O'Sullivan have been sent for forensic analysis.

CCTV footage has also been obtained of the car, which had false number plates.
