Very little remains of a row of houses in Newbridge, County Kildare after a fire engulfed half a dozen properties yesterday evening.

The blaze broke out in the Curragh Grange area of the Millfield Estate at around 4.30pm.

A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fire, which quickly spread and fully or partially destroyed six houses. Gardai say they are continuing to question the suspect.

This morning a committee was set up to help co-ordinate offers of help and donations for the affected families. A bank account has also been set up so that people can donate much-needed funding for the victims.

The details for the bank account for anybody looking to donate are as follows:

  • Bank – Permanent TSB
  • Account Name – Millfield Fire Fund
  • Account Number – 64524172540

Those affected lost all their possessions in the blaze and were last night accommodated by the Hotel Keadeen in the town.

“People were left with the clothes they were standing up in and nothing else. It will take them a long time to recover from this,” said Cllr Willie Crowley.

Emergency services, including several fire engines and ambulances, were called to the scene and spent much of the evening trying to bring the blaze under control. They were still at the scene this morning tackling pockets of fire.
