A 75-year-old man was attacked by a gang at his home in Wicklow while his wife was kept hostage yesterday morning.

The robbery, which occurred at the couple’s home in Killoughter close to Ashford village, took place at around 3.45am.

The retired couple were dragged from their beds by three men wearing balaclavas, who proceeded to ransack their home and caused considerable damage to the property.

One of the men also brutally attacked the homeowner with a hurley, and he was left shocked and injured.

It is believed the men discovered the hurleys in a car they had stolen in Irishtown on Wednesday afternoon.

They used the car – an Audi A6 – to make their getaway after taking a small sum of cash and a diamond engagement ring.

Gardai say they arrested two men in Tallaght at around 8am yesterday after a high-speed chase and they believe they are two of the three men responsible for the attack.

The men, who are currently being questioned at Tallaght garda station, are both believed to be well-known to the gardai and have a history of serious offences – including aggravated burglary.
