A young Irishman who allegedly attempted to sell a kilo of cannabis to an undercover cop in Thailand now faces spending the next 50-years behind bars.

The 23-year-old, who has been named by Thai police as Kieran Barry, was allegedly caught in a sting operation which was led by the Crime Suppression Division in Chiang Mai.

The Changrai Times reports that Barry was arrested outside the Chiang Mai Night Plaza Boutique Hotel as he attempted to sell a kilo of weed to officers for 200,000 baht (€5,092).

According to the Changrai Times Barry later confessed to buying and selling drugs and taking orders online and posting the cannabis to buyers.

Reports indicate that the undercover officer contacted him pretending to be a client.

A video was posted online by authorities in which the Irish man claims the officers set him up.

“He’s f***ing smart, man! He’s smart, he played me.. I had no money; I was looking for a joint.”

The man has been charged with a series of drug offences and has been remanded in police custody.
