Thousands of people remain without power this morning and the country will continue to be battered by Storm Barney today.

There are currently 15,000 people without power, after another 10,000 homes had power restored overnight.

Bernadine Maloney from ESB Networks said the worst affected areas in the country include Delvin, Gorey, Kilmartin, Ennistymon, Enniscorthy, Ennis, Thurles, Baltinglass, Mountrath, Newcastlewest, Kilcullen.

“We’re working to have the majority restored by tea time. There are many trees down which have brought down power lines and there’s a yellow wind warning in place today which will continue to hamper efforts to restore power throughout the day.”

“It’s really difficult, especially when you have large trees down. It’s obviously quite difficult, you have to cut the trees away from the power lines in order to restore

She advised people who wake up to find they have no power should check ESB power on a battery operated phone or computer. If their outage is not listed, they should call 1850 372 999.

“If you come across any damaged or fallen lines, please do not approach. Keep children and animals away and call 1850 372 999,” she added.

“There will be updates throughout the day on ESB power check.”
