14-year-old girl arrives to Dublin hospital and gives birth to second child

A 14-year-old Roma girl is under 24-hour guard after she presented herself to a Dublin hospital in the late stages of pregnancy.

The teenager is the youngest mum in the country to have two children, having given birth to her first child a year ago.

The Irish Sun reports that gardai are investigating whether the girl was the victim of incest, sexual slavery or arranged marriage.

Any girl who gives birth under the age of 16 is classed as a statutory rape victim.

The Star reports that the birth prompted concerns that the child and her mother would leave the hospital.

Tulsa, the Child and Family agency, were yesterday granted a care order in respect of the infant and her mother.

A HSE source told reporters that “This is a very sensitive case. Gardai were providing protection to this girl because under law, she has been the victim of a statutory rape. A garda investigation is under way in to the circumstances of the case.

Investigations into the birth could result in prosecution of the biological father for defilement of a child under the age of 17.
