14-year-old boy dies after getting into difficulty swimming
A teenage boy has died in hospital last night after getting into difficulty in the river Shannon.
It is understood the boy was swimming in the water close to the Athlone Sub Aqua clubhouse, north of the River Shannon bridge.
Members of the sub aqua club with help from the RNLI’s Coosan Point Unit came to his assistance.
He was rescued from the water with assistance from the Unit, and efforts to resuscitate him were made at the scene on the river bank.
Emergency services were called and the teen was rushed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe, where he later died.
