SHOT DOWN
Chalk this one down as a miss
SNIPER: GHOST WARRIOR PS3; Xbox 360
IF you like sniping then get ready to duck and dive through City Interactive's new first-person shooter Sniper: Ghost Warrior but be warned, liking this game is a long shot.
Essentially, the game takes the best sniping elements of recent popular SHOT action shooters including Modern Warfare 2 and builds the campaign and mechanics up from there.
Of course with this being a sniper title, a lot of the game's mechanics focus on the art of picking off enemies from a distance.
Patience
Wind speed, distance, bullet drop and heart rate are taken into account when trying to get off a perfect shot.
A red dot will appear if you hold your aim long enough and this pinpoints where your shot will land.
This doesn't take long to pick up but the stealth side of the game can be frustrating and require the patience of a saint.
You're supposed to stay in the shadows and sneak around, using the natural environment for cover. However, often you'll find that you've been found.
For some reason that I can't figure out, the environments are plagued by irrelevant, invisible walls and barriers that stop you in your tracks.
Enemies can sometimes pick you off through these walls though and spot you behind rocks and bushes. This kind of negates the whole stealth element of the game unfortunately.
Stealth
Most missions have one major scalp and you have to use all of your stealth skills to get in, make the kill and get out unnoticed.
The run and gun sequences aren't much better and more often than not end up with you being killed in a trial-and-error route through the level.
The game's visuals are pretty poor by current industry standards. The levels are vast and lush but the character models leave a lot to
be desired.
The music is better but the voice acting and dialogue are pretty weak.
Sniper: Ghost Warrior sounds great in theory but plays badly in practice. Online mode can offer something in the way of structure
because the AI is far too spontaneous.
But, if you can get past the poor level design, shoddy graphics and cheesy lines then this one might hit your target.
RATING: 4/10
