Tiger pulls some old magic out of the bag on the Wii

TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR 11 Nintendo Wii

EYE OF THE TIGER: Now watch this driveTIGER WOODS mightn't have been up to scratch this week at the JP McManus Pro-am but the latest golf sim bearing his name is the perfect round.

After all the controversy generated by Tiger's extra-curricular birdies, EA have parachuted Ireland's cub golf star Rory McIlroy on to the cover of the game to deflect some of the negative attention.

Last year's Tiger Woods on the Wii was by far the greatest golf sim ever made for a console and one of the best sports titles too.

Nintendo's then-new Wii MotionPlus made the accuracy of your swing crucial, and rightly so.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 isn't a huge leap forward but it includes enough refinements to warrant a look from Tiger and golf fans.

The game obviously lacks in the visuals' department when compared to the 360 and PS3 but, for me, the gameplay on the Wii is miles ahead.

The control schemes include the pick-upand- play "All Play" option for the beginner, "Normal" and "Advanced" options.

The streamlined modes are Advanced Plus and Tour Pro, two Motion Plus-enhanced controls that measures the movements in the backswing and the drive that results in a draw or a fade.

The new first-person "True View" mode shows the shot set-up through the eyes of your golfer, therefore when you're about to swing, you look at the ball and you can move the club with almost-perfect precision. Of course we are in a Ryder Cup year and this plays a big part in the game.

You can build a 12-person team for the event at Celtic Manor in Wales and use that team to compete in a series of match play events.

If a member of your team is in trouble in their match, you can jump in at the end of the hole and take over the action.

Boost

Your team responds to good shots with Team Pride, which energises your buddies and can boost their performance. In terms of the traditional golf modes, Foursome is the newcomer where two-on two teams alternate hitting the same ball.

Golfers and gamers alike will love the improvements introduced in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11.

The new controls and Ryder Cup mode, coupled with fun mini-games including crazy golf and disc golf, are all strokes of genius.
