Simon Cowell 'planning Prince and Bowie X Factor tributes'

Simon Cowell is reportedly planning to honour Prince and David Bowie on The X Factor.

The new series of the U.K. TV talent show kicks off in just three weeks' time, and already looks set to be an exciting one, with judges Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh all returning to the panel alongside Simon.

The X Factor traditionally enlists themes each week when the live shows kick off, and following the deaths of Bowie and Prince in January (16) and April respectively, music mogul Simon is said to be keen to remember the icons on the programme.

While Simon is up for the plan though, it is actually thought to be Louis who is pushing for the tribute weeks to be authorised by ITV bosses.

"Simon is a big fan of Bowie and has never held back his admiration for him," a source told Britain's The Sun newspaper. "But it’s actually Louis who has been pushing this. He thinks it would be a fitting tribute to both Prince and David who both sadly left us this year.

"Also, both have a huge repertoire of hits so it'll give the contestants a wide range of songs to choose from. There's upbeat stuff and big ballads they can belt out too so it'll be fair on everyone. But fans shouldn't get too excited, nothing is set in stone just yet."

Themes on previous years of The X Factor have included Love and heartbreak and Movie Week, where contestants sing their favourite songs from film soundtracks.

Simon had previously hoped to work with Bowie on The X Factor, asking him to join the judging panel. While the music icon declined, Simon insisted he wasn't planning to give up.

"It’s no secret I’ve asked him, and he hasn’t said yes yet, but I’ll keep extending the invitation," he said during an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper in 2013.

"Why Bowie? He’s a legend. He’s a great songwriter, he has massive influence on music today and he’s 100 per cent credible. I’m a fan. Not just of his music but of him, the man. He’s cool. Most of us aren’t. Bowie is."

The X Factor is expected to return to screens at the end of August (16).
