Ross Kemp returning to EastEnders
Ross Kemp is making an EastEnders comeback, with his character involved as part of Dame Barbara Windsor's final ever storyline for the soap.
The actor portrayed hard man Grant Mitchell, brother of Phil (Steve McFadden) and son of Peggy (Barbara), on-and-off between 1990 and 2006. He's now confirmed he is heading to Albert Square once again, although fans shouldn't expect him to be sticking around for too long.
"When I was approached about returning to EastEnders for Barbara's final episodes, it was something I could not turn down," he told BBC.
Peggy made a shock return to screens last week (ends15Jan16), where she told Phil her cancer was back. It was later confirmed by show bosses that Peggy is to be killed off, with her death shown on screen during the Spring (16).
"Barbara is a very close friend, so when I learned of the storyline it felt right that the Mitchell brothers are reunited with their mother for the last time," Ross explained.
"I am really looking forward to going back to EastEnders and filming what are set to be some classic EastEnders episodes."
He also confirmed the news on his Twitter page, writing: "Looking forward to working with Barbara, Steve, Letitia & all the @bbceastenders. Back to reality, I'm late for hostile environment training!"
Grant is one of the most iconic characters from the soap and was involved in many explosive storylines, including when he had an affair with Phil's wife Kathy. It's for this reason that show bosses are thrilled to have him back on screen.
"Grant Mitchell is an EastEnders legend and finally he is returning home to Walford to say goodbye to his mother and be reunited not just with his old loves but also his brother," EastEnders executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins said.
"To have the Mitchell brothers come face to face again, having to face losing their mother, is an opportunity to show Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden at their very best."
It's thought Ross will be on screen for just a few episodes in the Spring (16), when Peggy passes away.
