Nikki Sanderson cries on cue
Hollyoaks star Nikki Sanderson doesn’t need to use fake tears during emotional scenes.
The 31-year-old actress has had some tough storylines since joining the soap in 2012 as Maxine Minniver. Viewers will soon see the final stages of her relationship with Patrick Blake (played by Jeremy Sheffield), which include him trying to frame her for murder after he asked her to help him die.
Despite all the hard hitting plots she’s involved in, Nikki admits she doesn’t need any extra help to get ready for a scene. “I’m one of the actors that doesn’t use tear sticks, I like to get myself into that state and cry for real so yes, it does it take a toll,” she told Closer magazine. “You’ve got a 12-hour day and in every single scene, Maxine is hysterically crying. By mid-afternoon, I was physically exhausted. It does take its toll on you emotionally, physically and mentally, but it’s so worth it when you see it on screen.”
Prior to Hollyoaks, Nikki was a Coronation Street regular playing hairdresser Candice Stowe. She’s also had roles in Holby City, Casualty and Heartbeat.
“Over the years, I’ve used different techniques to get myself worked up - and I now get called the crying robot because I can just do it on cue,” she laughed. “But that’s just years and years of practice.”
Luckily for Nikki, she’s able to leave all the emotional baggage on set. To help her relax after a tough day the actress likes nothing more than a night on the couch.
“After one of those long emotional days, I just come home and have a big glass of wine and watch the TV!” she smiled.
