Nick Grimshaw: Cheryl Fernandez-Versini supports me
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini was more devastated than Nick Grimshaw when his X Factor performance was criticised.
The two stars sit on the judging panel of the UK TV show alongside Simon Cowell and Rita Ora, with Nick and Rita new this series. Nick replaced Louis Walsh, who was a fan favourite having been involved in the programme since it began in 2004, and his hiring was steeped in controversy, as some suggested he didn't have enough experience to offer hopefuls. The whisperings did get to him a little, but Cheryl was there to offer him support.
"Cheryl was like, ‘Just you wait. Everyone gets it on this show,'" he recalled. “I was like, ‘Louis Walsh doesn’t like me!’ and Cheryl was like, ‘Please.' She was more upset than me. She’s been very caring and welcoming to me and she phones me all the time and checks up on me.”
Nick was speaking at the Judges' Houses section of the show, which is when those who have made it through to the live episodes are decided. Part was recorded but the final decision will be aired live at the weekend (24-25Oct15).
Louis is famous for speaking out about The X Factor and has criticised Nick in the past, but the DJ insists the Irish star had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he called him a "groupie".
"Coming on after Louis, who’s been awesome for 11 years and a national treasure, that’s big shoes to fill," he said. "I think anyone would have got stick. I don’t know why he says those things. I think he just likes to wind people up. It’s panto."
Nick couldn't be with the other judges for part of the Boot Camp sequence, which is when the first round of cuts is made. He joined in decision making via Skype, and in one scene Simon was seen slamming a laptop shut in apparent fury at what Nick had said. It wasn't quite like that though, with the DJ assuring he and his boss are pals.
"Simon was like, ‘Why doesn’t your connection work on your boat?’" he explained. "I said, ‘No, the boat’s got wifi,’ and he went, ‘Well, it’s not working,’ and shut the laptop."
