Mary Berry stunned by Pointless host's potty mouth
Mary Berry was left horrified when Alexander Armstrong swore his way through a celebrity episode of Pointless.
The 81-year-old domestic goddess is most well known for her role as a judge on television show The Great British Bake Off. But she recently took part in a special showbiz edition of BBC quiz Pointless, hosted by comedian Alexander.
Alexander, 46, didn't hold back with his comments in front of the television legend, and shocked her when he used the word "mother f**ker".
"When we swear during filming, particularly when we have celebs on, it reminds them that we will edit it," he told The Sun.
"That’s when I decided to say 'mother f**ker' in front of Mary Berry. I don’t think she ever visibly relaxed."
Alexander is supported on the show by sidekick Richard Osman, 45, who admitted his pal's potty mouth means Mary is unlikely to make a return to the programme.
"She did not take it well and will not be back," he said.
However, Alexander insisted he was just trying to break the ice and make Mary feel comfortable on the show. But he is well aware that his attempt backfired.
"Sometimes the celebs are a bit prickly to start with," he said. "It takes a round or two to make them realise we’re not having a laugh at their expense."
Mary has never made a secret of her hatred of swearing, choosing to blast TV chef Gordon Ramsay for his regular on-screen cursing.
"I don’t think there is any excuse," she told Gordon. "If the young are watching they’ll think it’s normal and they can do it."
Mary will be reuniting with fellow judge Paul Hollywood when The Great British Bake Off returns to screens later this year (16). The last series was won by Nadiya Hussain and proved the culinary programme is showing no sign of waning in popularity.
