Louis Walsh 'giving Cowell X Factor advice'

It could be Louis Walsh to the rescue for this year's failing X Factor.

The singing competition is currently in its 12 season, which has seen the biggest change in the judging line-up since it started in 2004.

The X Factor stalwart Louis had been on the show since the beginning but was booted off this year in favour of Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. The move doesn't appear to have paid off though as the series has attracted underwhelming viewing figures, much to Simon Cowell's dismay.

"Simon has called Louis to chat through what hasn’t worked with the show so far this year," an ITV insider told The Sun.

"They remain close friends and Simon respects Louis’ opinion - he was a key factor behind the success of The X Factor.”

It's thought Simon swapped his friend for Nick in a bid to secure a younger audience. Rita Ora was also nabbed from rival singing show The Voice, which drummed up a publicity storm before the auditions kicked off.

However viewing figures for last week's opening weekend were down by more than a million on last year's first episode. An average of 7.6 million tuned in to watch the first round of hopefuls, compared to 2014's 8.9 million.

“He’s staying loyal to Grimmy but Louis very much remains part of The X Factor family," the source continued.

There is even speculation the Irishman could be making an appearance at some stage.

Last weekend The X Factor went head-to-head with Strictly Come Dancing for the first time, with the ballroom favourite claiming ratings victory. Despite Simon's boasts that he was confident his show could beat Peter Andre, a contestant on the rival show, it's failed to be the case.

Another Louis has also apparently been tasked with saving the show. One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is apparently lined up to be Simon's right hand band at the Judges' Houses stage of the competition.
