'It's time to fly the nest!' Paula Lane confirms Coronation Street exit

Paula Lane has confirmed she is quitting Coronation Street after five years on the ITV soap.

The 29-year-old actress joined the show in 2010 as Kylie Platt, and she quickly won herself legions of fans. After confirming she's pregnant with her second child with her husband Tom Shaw, due in the summer, Paula announced she will be leaving the programme ahead of the new arrival.

"So it's official, I can now confirm I'm leaving Coronation Street this summer after a wonderful 5 years. It's time to fly the nest..." Paula tweeted.

She is the seventh star to depart the show over the past year, sparking concern from some fans that there may be issues behind the scenes. However, ITV are sure to be hoping that the arrival of new boss Kate Oates later this year will combat any alleged problems, as she is said to be keen to focus on Coronation Street's lighter, more fun, storylines - leaving the darker ones to its rivals such as EastEnders.

Paula's decision to leave the show follows the departures of Les Dennis, Brooke Vincent, David Neilson, Alison King, Eileen Derbyshire and Ryan Thomas - many of which are temporary as the actors take on other projects away from the soap.

Explaining her departure in a statement, Paula said: "This has not been an easy decision for me to make. I have enjoyed every moment of my time on Coronation Street and learnt so much in the process. I have an amazing on-screen family who have become friends for life, so this decision was not taken lightly.

"Sometimes you just have to follow your heart, and I am excited about what the future has to offer both personally and professionally."

Her co-stars, including Jane Danson, were quick to show Paula their support, and producer Stuart Blackburn offered her his best wishes going forward.

"Paula is one of the most talented and dedicated actors I know, and in Kylie she has created an unforgettable Corrie character," he said. "I for one will miss both the character and the actor, and on behalf of all at Coronation Street wish Paula all the love and luck in the world. And, I'm certain that Paula's future will be full of continued success."
