Home Fires cast left shocked as show is axed
Home Fires star Dan Ryan is in "total shock" after ITV axed the Second World War drama.
The programme which starred Francesca Annis and Samantha Bond returned for its second series earlier this year (16), and its finale aired on Sunday night (08May16) with a huge cliffhanger.
Viewers were kept in suspense and desperate for answers after a Spitfire aircraft crash landed into Dr Campbell's house, presumably taking the lives of many of the residents of the fictional town of Great Paxford.
However, fans of the show won't find out who escaped death after ITV surprisingly decided to cancel the programme.
While fans were left devastated by the news, it also came as a shock to Dan, who played butcher Bryn Brindsley in the show.
He tweeted on Wednesday night (11May16): "So, it is with huge sadness I must tell you that #HomeFires has been cancelled. Awful to leave stories untold and lives incomplete. Sorry.
"Cast are all in total shock. We were so excited to come back and tell these beautiful stories. Also, we haven’t been given any reason."
According to The Sun newspaper, four episodes of the third season had been written, which makes ITV's decision all the more surprising.
The channel said in a statement: "We are incredibly proud of what Home Fires has achieved, but the ITV commissioning team continues to refresh the channel’s drama portfolio, hence the decision not to commission a further new series."
Since the decision was revealed, fans have created an online petition in a bid to encourage ITV to reconsider their decision to axe the show, with 2,836 people having signed it so far.
The Radio Times also started a poll asking people whether they agreed with the axe, with 98 per cent of those who voted insisting Home Fires should have been brought back for a third series.
Following the outpouring of support from fans, the show's writer and creator Simon Block took to Twitter, writing: "#homefires The roar of disapproval transforms into an ongoing howl of protest. We're incredibly touched by the love for your/our show."
