George Cole dies

George Cole has died at the age of 90.

The English actor is best known for playing Arthur Daley in TV show Minder, a role he helmed from 1979 to 1994.

His agent Derek Webster confirmed the sad news, revealing he passed away at the Royal Berkshire Hospital following a short illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time.

“It is with deep regret that I have to announce the sad death of one of our most loved and respected actors,” Derek announced.

“George Cole passed away yesterday at the Royal Berkshire Hospital after a short illness. His wife Penny and his son Toby were with him at his bedside.”

The veteran star has been absent from the small and big screen since his 2008 appearances in Heartbeat and Midsomer Murders, but he was eager to make one last appearance before he died.

Movie Road Rage had been announced, but production was delayed. Road Rage writer-and-director Spencer Hawken has revealed his sadness at the news.

“The last time I spoke to George was to let him know the movie had been delayed and he said: 'Please get a move on, I would like to make another movie before I die.' I am absolutely mortified,” Spencer said, reports the Daily Mail.

George’s screen career spanned more than 60 years, with notable roles in cinema classics Cleopatra, A Christmas Carol and the original St Trinian’s movies.

He was twice nominated for a BAFTA TV Award and was also awarded an OBE in 1992.
