Emmerdale's Gemma Oaten: I need me-time

Gemma Oaten is going to take some time to be selfish after her Emmerdale departure.

The 31-year-old actress has had a tough 2015 so far and suffered several losses in her personal life, with her granddad and friend tragically passing away, and her relationship with Andy Barnes falling apart.

After having already had a break from the popular soap before making a surprise return in January, Gemma is set to bid a final farewell to her alter ego Rachel Breckle to focus on herself.

"I'm 31 and I've spent four years in one place. It was a privilege, but now is a good time. I'm single and can live quite selfishly. If one day I'm lucky enough to become a mum and a wife, even those priorities can change," she told British magazine Closer.

Fans have seen a nasty side to Rachel since her return to the village, especially when it comes to her boyfriend Sam Single (James Hooton). She's even turned to physical abuse and Gemma puts her character's behaviour down to having been on the receiving end of such actions in the past.

Rachel's situation with Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson) has also caused tension for her. The pair had a one-night stand, resulting in their son Archie.

"On the day of her sister-in-law Ruby's (Alicya Eyo) funeral, Sam's phone rings as he's carrying the coffin and she's very angry," Gemma explained. "Her sister Ali (Kelli Hollis) drags her home and asks her what's going on. Rachel's had a tough time with her and Jai's ongoing battles over their son Archie and she hates what she's become. There are some big decisions to make."
