Coronation Street ‘to tackle revenge porn’

Coronation Street will reportedly tackle the subject of revenge porn with a storyline involving Steph Britton, played by Tisha Merry.

Increasing numbers of victims are being targeted by angry exes, who upload compromising pictures of their former flames to social networking sites and other web pages without their permission.

Now the soap is hoping to call viewers' attention to the issue by using a shocking storyline in which Steph finds intimate pictures of herself online, posted by an ex in an attempt at blackmail.

“The rise of revenge porn, particularly on the internet, is a very modern phenomenon and Corrie always tries to reflect what is going on in the wider society,” an insider explained to Britain’s The Sun newspaper.

“We will show how it can wreck lives. Poor old Steph is an innocent party and will be drawn into a situation not of her own making, which will have a devastating impact on her.”

The callous ex in question is Jamie, played by former Hollyoaks actor James Atherton. Initially he tries to convince Steph’s brother Luke, played by Dean Fagan, to race track cars with him to make some money. But when he declines, he turns to the revenge/blackmail porn plot.

That’s when things really turn nasty and the audience could be in for some harrowing scenes.

“The emotional turmoil Steph goes through will shock viewers,” the source added.

Earlier this year (15) the government took steps to make revenge porn illegal. Perpetrators posting images without the consent of the person in the pictures could face up to two years in jail.
