Carol Vorderman backs Suzi Perry for Top Gear job

Carol Vorderman has backed television presenter Suzi Perry to replace Chris Evans as Top Gear host.

The 55-year-old beauty is no stranger to screens, having acted as the maths whizz on quiz show Countdown from 1982 until 2008. And following Chris' news that he is stepping down from the BBC motoring programme, Carol has a suggestion for his replacement.

"I do think the BBC should have more women. I think Suzi Perry would be brilliant for Top Gear, she’s a good buddy of mine," Carol told the Daily Mirror newspaper.

Suzi is most well known for covering MotoGP for BT Sport, as well as presenting the BBC's Formula One coverage from 2013 to 2015, and hosting The Gadget Show on Channel 5 for nine years.

One person who won't be taking the reins from Chris is Carol herself, who admits she's something of a "nut" when it comes to cars and driving.

However, she is unsure whether the revamped motoring show will enjoy the same success as its predecessor, which was hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.

"I’ve been following Top Gear for years. It’s still very much about the cars as before but Jeremy, James and Richard developed it as entertainment," she explained.

"Even people who weren’t interested in cars would watch it and laugh. That’s what took it to the next level. I think it will carry on but to get three people who work together in that fashion is very unusual. You can’t just shove people together and expect it."

“Those three have you crying laughing because they too were genuinely crying laughing. You can’t make that up. The viewer can tell when it’s scripted. When it’s genuine you can’t help but love it."

Chris had been hosting the show alongside former Friends star Matt LeBlanc, who is apparently being courted by the BBC to sign up for a second series.
