Andrew Smyth hoping for TV success after The Great British Bake Off
The Great British Bake Off finalist Andrew Smyth is hoping to get into science presenting off the back of the show.
The baking programme comes to an end on Wednesday night (26Oct16) in a tense final as Andrew takes on Candice Brown and Jane Beedle in a bid to be crowned champion of the final series on the BBC.
In an interview conducted before the final aired, aerospace engineer Andrew told the Daily Mirror newspaper that he is hoping his appearance on the show will lead to more TV work.
"I’d love to use Bake Off as a route into science presenting and getting people enthusiastic about the world around them. I’ll be baking more than ever though!" he said.
The finalists will be preparing meringues, a technical challenge with just one instruction and their last ever showstopper. The trio have become household names since the programme aired, and Andrew has enjoyed the social media aspect of his fame.
"I only joined Twitter when Bake Off started and it’s mad to think nearly 20 thousand people want to follow me now!" he laughed. "It’s been a whirlwind."
Candice has also enjoyed her increased profile on Twitter, telling the paper: "I started at about 154 (followers) and I now have over 27,000. I have loved the support each week but the funniest are the little gifs they make of us!!! All the best bits!!"
The P.E. teacher, who has become famous for her coloured lipstick during each episode, added she would have no qualms about taking part in the Bake Off experience over again.
"I would do it 100 times over in a heart beat! I loved every second! I’d love to bake all the time, but only time will tell," she smiled coyly.
Meanwhile, Jane cited the support of her relatives for helping her get to the final, adding that the whole family watch the programme together on Wednesday evenings.
"The family all watch it together. My husband is loving it now that the kitchen is cleaner and the recipe development period is over, he was my chief washer upper," she said. "He is extremely proud that I’ve got to the final and thoroughly enjoys it when I am stopped in the street and asked for a selfie. He is my number one fan."
The final of The Great British Bake Off airs at 8pm on BBC One.
