A police car's dash cam has captured a very unusual turn of events during a routine traffic stop.

Police pull over a 73-year-old man in Seattle as he was driving without his headlights on.

They checked his records to show he had a clean licence and they were about to send him on his way with a warning when they spotted him "portioning out a scoop of cocaine from a small glass vial", according to a police statement.

In the video you can see the stunned cop say: "What is that? Are you kidding? You're about to snort coke on the side of the road?"

The man mumbles something about vitamins before spilling the powder on the floor.

The cops continue to be disbelieving that the man would even attempt to try this and after a brief chat at the station the police report records that the man admitted to the foolish deed.

He was subsequently charged with possession of narcotics.
